For this tutorial the result will be a 200x200 pixel mud texture, but we're going to start off with a 400x400 blank image, and then reduce it in size later. Create a blank canvas and then fill it with a light brown color and then select black as your background color.

Create some clouds by going to Filter > Render > Difference Clouds. You should have something like the image below. |

Next, we're going to simplify the clouds a bit with Paint Daubs. Go to Filter > Artistic > Paint Daubs, and then enter the values shown in the image below. |

We now need to increase the contrast of the image with Emboss. You can do this by going to Filter > Stylize > Emboss and then entering the values shown in the image below. |

The overall image should look something like this:

Next use Bass Relief, by going to Filter > Sketch > Bas Relief, and then enter the values shown in the image. |

You should have something like in the image below, but you'll notice that the image is slightly blurry. Reduce it in size by going to Image > Image Size and then enter 200 for both width and height. |
