You can see the result of this tutorial in the image below.
Step 1.
Start off by making a new photoshop document with a black background. Create your text with a nice large font. I've used Verdana 150 pt here. Make a selection out of the text, and then feather(select > feather) it by 5 pixels. Then contract the selection by 7 pixels.

Step 3.
On a new layer fill the selection with a light grey and you should end up with something like in the image below. Next, go to Part 2 of this Photoshop tutorial.
