Painting Semi Realism in Photoshop By Tash

Step 1.

For this tutorial we'll be using a photo of Kristen Stewart as a reference. It helps if the photo is quite large as you'll need to be able to see smaller details later on. If you can't find a large image that you like, follow the steps below. If you have one big enough, move straight to step 3.

Step 2. (Optional) Resizing Your Photo

Can't find a photo you like in a big enough size? There's a method you can use to make it larger without losing too much quality. It's not ideal, but it'll do. First open up a photo. This is Kristens eye zoomed in at 600%. See how pixelated it is? We can fix that. Go to image > image > size. Now select the drop-down box that says 'pixels' and change it to percent. Set it to 200 and hit ok.

Now go to filter > sharpen > sharpen. You might need to do this a couple of times, but not too much as you'll lose an equal amount of quality as you started with. It might not look much of a difference, but every detail helps later on when you come to paint the eyes and mouth etc.
Step 3. Creating the Outline

As this is simply a painting tutorial, I'm going to trace the outline directly from the photo to make a workable sketch. Take you photo and lower the opacity of it to around 60% Now make a new layer over it and name it sketch or similar. It really helps to name your layers, as you'll have a lot of them! Now take a bright color (I usually use blue, red or green)
And get tracing! Use a very small brush. It's only basic, but make sure you get as much detail as possible in there. Zoom is your friend.

Finshed Sketch
Don't worry, it almost always looks scary at this stage, particularly if our subject is showing teeth. If you want to, you could always add lines preferably in a different color, outlining where you want your basic shades to go.
